Laparoscopic surgery

Laparoscopic, or keyhole, surgery is a minimally invasive approach that allows us to operate using much smaller incisions than in traditional open surgery, while also allowing for a high level of precision and safety.

It’s used in gynaecology to diagnose and treat a range of conditions, as it brings a number of benefits for the patient. Much like robotically assisted surgery, these include less pain, a faster recovery, and smaller scarring which can also mean a lower risk of infection.

Laparoscopic surgery is carried out through a few small incisions in your abdomen. A thin tube with a camera (a laparoscope) is inserted, and provides a detailed view of your pelvic organs, which we can see on a monitor, allowing us to carry out the surgery (also through the small incisions) with great accuracy and minimal disruption to the surrounding tissue.

Laparoscopic surgery can be used to treat many conditions, including ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, and early-stage gynaecological cancers.

It’s also used for procedures like hysterectomy (removal of the womb), oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries), and fertility-related surgery. While laparoscopic surgery isn’t suitable for all cases, it offers distinct benefits to the patient.

As mentioned above, laparoscopic procedures typically involve smaller incisions, less blood loss, smaller scars and a lower risk of infection.

Most patients experience reduced pain and quicker recovery times, which can mean a shorter stay in hospital. Scarring is minimal, and many patients find they’re able to return to their normal routine within a few weeks.

Yes. Laparoscopic surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, so you’ll be completely asleep and won’t feel any pain during the operation.

We’ll keep you closely monitored throughout, and your surgical and anaesthetic teams will keep you safe and comfortable at all times.

Recovery will vary depending on what procedure you’re having, but most people can go home either the same day or after a night in hospital.

You may feel some discomfort or bloating for a few days, but this usually settles quickly. We’ll give you detailed recovery advice and follow-up support to make sure you’re healing well.
