Abnormal cervical screening
It’s important to remember that having an abnormal cervical screening result doesn’t mean you have cancer, it simply means that your sample showed some changes that need further investigation. In fact, most abnormal smears are caused by changes in the cells of the cervix that can be monitored or treated to prevent cancer from developing in the future.
We offer expert assessment, clear guidance, and follow-up care to help you understand your results and decide on the next steps.
The most common cause is infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is very common and usually goes away on its own, but in some cases, it can cause cell changes that may become more serious over time if left untreated. One of the reasons that screening is so important is that it helps us catch these changes early.
Depending on the type of changes found, you may be invited for a follow-up test called a colposcopy. During this procedure, we use a special microscope to carry out a closer examination of your cervix. Sometimes, we’ll take a small sample (biopsy) in order to find out what’s going on. It’s a simple outpatient procedure that doesn’t take long.
While it’s completely normal to feel anxious, you should try not to panic. The vast majority of women with abnormal smears do not go on to develop cervical cancer. We’ll make sure you get your results quickly and support you at every stage with clear guidance and expert care.
The most important thing you can do is to attend regular cervical screening appointments. If you’re eligible, you could also have the HPV vaccine, which offers further protection.
